How Solar Works

How Solar and Battery Systems Work
When sunlight strikes your solar panels, photovoltaic (PV) cells convert it into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC power flows from the solar array to the inverter.
The inverter, powered by the grid like any standard appliance, converts the DC electricity into alternating current (AC) — the form of power used by your home. Once converted, the electricity supplies your household and any excess is exported to the grid.
In a DC-coupled system with a hybrid inverter and battery, the DC electricity flows directly to the battery before conversion. This configuration is highly efficient, as the energy is only converted once before being used.
Alternatively, AC-coupled battery systems convert electricity three times:
-
From DC to AC (for household use)
-
From AC back to DC (to charge the battery)
-
From DC to AC again (when discharging to power your home)
While AC coupling has a lower efficiency rating, it offers greater flexibility — making it the preferred option when adding a battery to an existing solar system.

New Energy Tech Consumer Code (NETCC) Authorised Retailers such us, Solar Coaster, are eligible to trade Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STC's) on behalf of the client. This will be shown as a credit on the tax invoice, labelled 'STC'. The Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme is only operating until 2030. The rebate is calculated by the amount of carbon emissions your solar will off-set before 2030. So, each year the amount you can claim decreases, meaning, the longer you wait, the less rebate you get! Bottom line: If you're serious about being green and saving some money long term, don't wait, act now.
